Jane Gilligan, housemaid, was 5 foot 1½ inches (156cm) tall. And Edward Burris, blacksmith, was 5 foot 6¼ inches (168cm) tall. Both were young offenders and convicted criminals, forced by transportation to leave the Mother Country. Their grandson Wybert Burris, also a blacksmith, was 5 foot 9½ inches (177cm) tall. At thirty-three he went to fight in the Great War, to defend the Mother Country.
