The Book Thief

In an era when fewer people could read and write, James Heritage’s first crime of ‘stealing a book’ was highly unusual. Eventually he was transported for Life for ‘stealing plate’. Despite his crimes, James knew a thing or two. He understood the importance of a good education. In the Colony, education transformed his family prospects, beginning with his son George Heritage who rose to be Inspector of Schools.
