In the late 1960s Air Commodore Ray Brownell C.B.E. M.C. M.M. was encouraged to produce a memoir. He wrote with pride about being descended from Dr. Thomas Brownell, Colonial Assistant Surgeon and Medical Officer at the Port Arthur. Curiously there is no mention in From Khaki to Blue of Ray’s other Tasmanian great-grandfather, Joseph Spark Preston, who arrived in Van Diemen’s Land a convicted man.
