For Considering Selfs

Frederick Augustus Self (1879-1918)

In January 1918 Frederick Augustus Self was happily married to Emily Ward, and the proud father of four young children when he decided to enlist in the First Australian Imperial Force (AIF). The war was dragging on and recruits were needed desperately.
Though he had doubts about facing the enemy and firing a gun at another human, like many young men he saw it as his duty to enlist.
Fred may have had a premonition that he wouldn’t survive. In his letters home he asked to be remembered as a good and loving father. He was killed in action on 11 August 1918 near Lihons, in the battle to save Amiens. He was just 29 years old.
