He had trouble staying out of trouble

‘There are 15 witnesses who prove that I am innocent’. But alas he couldn’t produce them on the day of his trial, so Ephraim Quamby was convicted of rape. Within five days of the alleged offence he was on a transport ship to Van Diemen’s Land. Witnesses came forward with a petition but to no avail. It appears that this could well be a case of mistaken identity. His family story is beset with misfortune across generations. Three grandsons in the ‘war to end all wars’, with one making the ultimate sacrifice.
